The Victoria’s riflebird: nature’s conductor

Introducing Leonard Birdstein

Bird-of-paradise meets Beethoven

Check out this handsome chap – a male Victoria’s riflebird putting on an impressive display for a lucky lady friend.

If you’ve seen the video, you’ll understand why the flutterings of this flamboyant fowl reminded us of nothing more than a classical conductor on the podium. The erect posture, the rhythmic waving, the expressive gesturing to every corner of a hidden ensemble, the abrupt exit from the stage – it’s all there.

So we did what any sane, normal music-lovers would do, and set him to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.

You’re welcome.

Leonard Birdstein? John Budgirolli? Esa-Pecker Salonen? We want your best – and worst – bird/conductor-based puns. Let us have them in the comments below!
