Timelapse video shows opera house emerge from desert

Dhow you see it

The new Dubai Opera House shows the emirate’s determination to taken seriously as a cultural destination

This slow-burning yet deeply satisfying video comes courtesy of the newly opened Dubai Opera House, which announced details of its inaugural season launch today.

The video shows the 2,000-seat performing arts venue gradually taking shape to the accompaniment of scurrying strings in the Overture to Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro.

The latest addition to Dubai’s cultural scene lies in the shadow of the Burj Khalifa in an area of downtown Dubai City that promoters have already hopefully dubbed ‘The Opera District’. With a curvaceous exterior inspired by the shape of a traditional dhow, the venue’s interior can be adapted to host opera, ballet, theatre, concerts and even banquets.

Its opening event in Autumn 2016 will be a concert given by Spanish tenor-turned-baritone Plácido Domingo. Full season details will be announced soon on the venue’s website, with tickets going on sale on 24 April.

probably the least satisfying time lapse I’ve seen recently.
